THIRUVALLUVAR STATUE

The statue is an embodiment of essence of Tamil classic `Thirukkural` authored by saint Thiruvalluvar. The statue is constructed on one of the twin-rocks in mid-sea. This 33 feet tall statue commemorates the 133 chapters of the Thirukkural.

The statue is fully made up of granite stones, weighin 7000 tonnes and comprising 3681 pieces of granite boulders, each weighing 3 to 8 tonnes.

MAHABALIPURAM

It is situated on the shore of the Bay of Bengal. It is a must-visit destination if you are in the South India. The history of Mahabalipuram dates back to two thousand years, it contains nearly forty monuments of different types including an `open air bas relief` which is the largest in the world, for centuries it has been a center of pilgrimage.
The proper name of the site is `Mamallapuram`, after Mamalla, an honorific of the Pallava King narashimha varman who created the earliest of its monuments. But is popularly called Mahaballipuram.
Shore temple
Internationally renowed shore temple and other marvelous stone. Close to these is the two-spire Shore temple, which was built in the 8th century. It has shrines to Shiva and Vishnu. Originally much closer to the water, the temples now stand about 100 m inland as the waters have receded.
Sir sthalasayana perumal temple
This temple is very near to the bus stand. Here Lord vishnu without his weapon, the sanku and the chakra, and without his customary `bed` `adi sesha, is somehow a humblin experience. Lying on the ground with one hand supporting his head and the other raised up in the traditional gesture of invitationj. the lord somehow seems defenceless, though the rational mind says this is not true. Of course, it is only a posture he has assumed to make it clear how accessible he is to the true devotee. In this case, Saga Pundarika, a greate devotee of Lord Vishnu. The temple being referred to is the `sthalasayana Perumal` which has been describled by the Azhwars as `kadalmallai` The goddess is `Nilamangai` the goddess of the earth.
Thirukadalmallai is one of the 108 vaishnative Divay Desams sund of by the Azhwars. It is also the birthplace Bhoothathalwar, one of the earliest of the Alwars.

VEDANTHANGAL

A major water-bird sactuary. It is situated 83 km from chennai on the way to Tiruchi. The 30 hectare national santuary here is visited every year by thousands of migratory birds, which come during October to March. Regular buses available from chengalpattu.and tambaram. A large mashy area nearly 100 species of migratory birds, some coming from as the Siberaian North.

            சதுரகிரி மகாலிங்கம் – காரையார் சொரிமுத்து அய்யனார்  

ஆடி அமாவாசையை முன்னிட்டு சதுரகிரி சுந்தர மகாலிங்கம், சந்தன மகாலிங்கம் ஆலயங்களில் லட்சக்கணக்கான பக்தர்கள் குவிந்துள்ளனர்.

சதுரகிரி - நான்கு மலைகள் எனப் பொருள் படும். விருதுநகர் மாவட்டம் வத்திராயிருப்பு, மற்றும் பேரையூர் வட்டம் இடையே, மலைகள் சூழ்ந்த பகுதியாகும்.அப்பகுதியில் தான் சதுரகிரி அமைந்துள்ளது. சித்தர்கள் வசிக்கும் பகுதியாக, சிந்தையிலே சிவனை வைத்தவர்களுக்கு பூலோக கயிலாயமாக, இயற்கை அன்னையின் அருள் மிகுந்த பகுதியாக,எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் மேலாக சர்வேஸ்வரன் அங்கிருந்து அருளும் இடமாக சதுரகிரி அமைந்துள்ளது. இங்கு இறைவன் சுந்தரமகாலிங்கம், சந்தனமகாலிங்கம் திருநாமத்துடன் எழுந்தருளியுள்ளார்.

சிவஸ்தலமான சதுரகிரி மலை கோயிலில் ஆண்டு தோறும் ஆடி அமாவாசை சிறப்பாக கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது.  வியாழக்கிழமை விழா தொடங்கியது முதலே சுந்தர மகாலிங்கம், சந்தன மகாலிங்கம், சுந்தரமூர்த்தி, பிலாவடி கருப்பசுவாமி கோயில்களில் சிறப்பு அபிஷேகம், தீபாராதனைகள், சங்கொலி பூஜைகள்  நடைபெற்றன. ஆடி ஆமாவாசை விழாவையொட்டி, கடந்த ஒருவாரமாகவே பக்தர்கள் மலைக்கு வந்தவண்ணம் இருந்தனர். வியாழக்கிழமை முதல் பக்தர்கள் கூட்டம் அதிகரித்தது. மலையடிவாரமான தாணிப்பாறை, மந்தித்தோப்பு, மாவூத்து மற்றும் அதன் சுற்றுப்பகுதி வயல்வெளிகள், தோப்புகளில் கூடாரம் அமைத்து, பக்தர்கள் தங்கியுள்ளனர். லட்சக்கணக்கான பக்தர்கள் மலை ஏறி சுந்தர மகாலிங்கம், சந்தன மகாலிங்கம் சுவாமிகளை தரிசனம் செய்து வருகின்றனர்.

காரையார் – சொரிமுத்து அய்யனார்

நெல்லை மாவட்டம் காரையார் காணிக்குடியிருப்பு சொரிமுத்து அய்யனார் கோயிலின் ஆடி அமாவாசை திருவிழா மிகவும் பிரசித்தி பெற்றது. பண்டைய காலத்தில் கைலாய மலையில் சிவன்-பார்வதி திருமணம் நடந்தபோது பூமியை சமன்படுத்த அகஸ்தியர் பொதிகை மலை சென்றார். அப்போது தற்போது கோயில் இருக்கும் பகுதியில் அகஸ்தியர் லிங்க பூஜை செய்தார். காலப்போக்கில் அந்த லிங்கம் மண்ணால் மூடப்பட்டது.

பிற்காலத்தில் வாணிபம் விஷயமாக மாட்டு வண்டிகள் அவ்வழியாக சென்றபோது ஒரு கல்லில் மாட்டு குழம்புகள் பட்டு ரத்தம் கசிந்தது என்றும், இவ்வழியாக சென்ற பசு மாடுகள் ஓரிடத்தில் மட்டும் பால் சொரிந்தன என்ற சம்பவங்கள் நடந்துள்ளது. இந்த விஷயம் குறித்து அப்பகுதி மக்களுக்கு தகவல் தெரிந்து சம்பவ இடத்தில் தோண்டி பார்த்தபோது அங்கு ஒரு லிங்கம் இருந்ததை கண்டு பரவசமடைந்தனர்.

பின்னர் அங்கு கோயில் எழுப்பி சுவாமி தரிசனம் செய்து வந்தனர். அகஸ்தியர் வழிபட்ட லிங்கம் என்பதால் காலப்போக்கில் மிகவும் பிரசித்தி பெற்று விளங்க துவங்கியது. மேலும் பந்தல மன்னர் அரண்மனையில் வளர்ந்து வந்த சுவாமி அய்யப்பன் தனது சிறுவயதில் தற்போது கோயில் இருக்கும் இடத்திற்கு வந்து வீர விளையாட்டுக்களை கற்க வந்தார் என்றும் ஸ்தல புராணங்கள் தெரிவிக்கின்றன.

பத்துநாள் திருவிழா

இக்கோயிலில் மகாலிங்கம், சொரிமுத்து அய்யனார், சங்கிலி பூதத்தார், பிரம்மராட்சஸி, தளவாய்மாடன், தூசிமாடன், பட்டவராயர், அகஸ்தியர், பேச்சியம்மன், சுடலைமாடன், கரடிமாடசாமி ஆகிய சுவாமிகள் குடி கொண்டு பக்தர்களுக்கு அருள்பாலித்து வருகின்றனர். இக்கோயிலில்  ஆடி அமாவாசை திருவிழா 10 நாட்கள் நடைபெறும். இதனையொட்டி  கடந்த 21ம் தேதி கோயிலில் கால்நாட்டு வைபவம் நடந்தது.

பத்து நாட்களும் தினமும் சுவாமிகளுக்கு சிறப்பு அபிஷேகம் மற்றும் அலங்காரங்கள் நடைபெற்றன.  பிரசித்தி பெற்ற இக்கோயிலின் ஆடி அமாவாசை தினத்தன்று சுவாமி தரிசனம் செய்யவும், பொங்கலிடவும் மாவட்டத்தின் பல்வேறு பகுதிகளிலிருந்து பக்தர்கள் தங்கள் குடும்பத்தினருடன் கோயிலுக்கு வந்த வண்ணம் உள்ளனர்.

HOGENAKKAL

Hogenakkal is situated on the border of karnataka, 46 kms from Dharmapuri. One of the major rivers of India and a perennial river of South India the Cauveri flows through make the soil fertile.

Kudagu in Karnataka is where the Cauveri originates as a small stream and gathers momentum and gets bigger on her way down. It is in Hogenakkal that the Cauveri enters Tamilnadu as a big river with gushin waters presents a waterfall.

The setting of the descent of the Cauveri at Hogenakkal is panoramic. The name Hogenakkal is derived from kannada. It means smoky rocks. The gushin force of the water when it fall on the rocks below looks like smoke emanating from the rocks. hoge in kannada means smoke and of kal means rock the falls and the place were called Hogenakkal.

At many places the falls descends as far as 20 mtrs. The water also makes a continuous thundering sound. This gives the area a different atmoshphere. At Hogenakkal the water spreads for miles around. The locally made boats are called parisa. A parisal ride will give you a rare experience.

Surrounded by hills at various heights, Hogenakkal offers the visitors a different ambience and is a refreshing place to relax. Fresh fish caught in the river is cooked and served. One can also take bath in the falls. Local people give oil massages. As the river flows through out the year, Hogenakkal can be visited through the year. To add attraction the forest department maintains a mini zoo and a crocodile park here.

RAMESWARAM

Rameswarm is one of the most sacred place of India. It is an island in the Gulf of Mannar. It is considered a holy site, as it was here that Rama performed a pooja to Lord Siva, on his return from Lanka after killing King Ravana, therefore a holy place both Saivites and Vaishnavites.

Sri Ramanathaswami Temple

This temple is constructed at the spot where Lord Rama offered worship to the Sand Lingam-Ramanathaswami mady by Sita Devi is called the Siva Lingam brought by hanuman from the Kailasam is called Viswa Lingam,. The constrution of the temple as it stands today, a wonderful example of Tamil architecture, was started in the 12th century and ended in 19th century. All the rulers in a span of 350 years contributed greatly to various aspects and section of the temple.

The most interesting feature in the temple is the 1,220 m long corridor with the beautiful carving on the pillars, walls and ceiling. The temple has 22 theertahs which are believed to have medical properties

KODAIKANAL

Kodaikanal comes from the Tamil words `kodai` and `kanal` literally means `relief from heat` and the place never disappoints the traveller.
Located 120 kilometer from Madurai, this hill station is more than 2133meters above level draws tourists to the verdant charms of its spectacular lake, the waterfalls and shoals or forests.
Season
April-June and September-October. The temparature ranges between 12 and 20 c in summber and between 8 to 18 degree C in winter.
The Lake:
This magnificent lake with boating facilities and a 5 km long promenade skirting it are the main attrations of kodaikanal.
Bryant Park
This Park is situated on the estern side of the Lake. It is famous for its hybrids and grafts, cut flowers are exported from here. In may, the annaul horticultural show is held.
Coaker`s Walk
Just one kilometer from the lake. It derives the name from Lt. Coaker, who prepared the map of Kodaikanal. Coaker`s walk runs a long a steep, emerald green wooded slope. Entry fee is collected here.
Green Valley View
It is about 5.5 km from the lake and very near the Golf Club. Originally this was know as Suicide Point. From here, the vaigai Dam below offers an enchanting view.
Pillar Rocks
It is about 7.4 km from the lake. Three boulders stand here, shoulder to shoulder, vertically measuiring 400 feet, providing a majestic sight. It has a mini gardern with beautiful flowers.
Kurinji Andavar Temple
The temple is situated 3 km from the lake, is a famous shrine dedicated to Lord Murugan. This temple is associated with the Kurinji flowers which blooms once in 12 years. From this temple one can have a pleasant view of palani and Vaigai Dam.
Chettiar Park
This park is one the way to Kurinji Andavar temple. The Chettiar park is charming place to stop by.

SOTHUPPARAI DAM

It is located 12 km from periyakulam. This dam is built across the varaha river. It is a beautiful picnic spot. and the wide expancse of stored water is an impressive sight.

KUMBAKARAI FALLS

It is an amazing feat of nature, and is yet another of Tamilnadu`s tourist attractions. Comparatively less known, these falls offer a breathtaking view.
