RAMESWARAM

Rameswarm is one of the most sacred place of India. It is an island in the Gulf of Mannar. It is considered a holy site, as it was here that Rama performed a pooja to Lord Siva, on his return from Lanka after killing King Ravana, therefore a holy place both Saivites and Vaishnavites.
Sri Ramanathaswami Temple
This temple is constructed at the spot where Lord Rama offered worship to the Sand Lingam-Ramanathaswami mady by Sita Devi is called the Siva Lingam brought by hanuman from the Kailasam is called Viswa Lingam,. The constrution of the temple as it stands today, a wonderful example of Tamil architecture, was started in the 12th century and ended in 19th century. All the rulers in a span of 350 years contributed greatly to various aspects and section of the temple.
The most interesting feature in the temple is the 1,220 m long corridor with the beautiful carving on the pillars, walls and ceiling. The temple has 22 theertahs which are believed to have medical properties
