pasupathi pandian

The funeral procession of founder of Devendra Kula Velalar Koottamaippu, C Pasupathi Pandian, from Tuticorin to Alangara Thattu, left a trail of violence on Wednesday as onlookers and those who happened to pass by were attacked and shops on the route damaged in stone pelting.
Miscreants hurled petrol bombs at two compartments of trains in Ramanathapuram district. Passengers of Rameswaram-Chennai Express and Madurai-Rameswaram passenger trains escaped unhurt when petrol bombs were hurled at them in two different locations between Paramakudi and Ramanathapuram
Having started from Dindigul Wednesday morning, the supporters reached the outskirts of Thoothukudi around 3 pm.
As they wanted to take the body in a procession to Pandian’s native village, Alangarathattu, the police permitted them to take the by-pass road.
The men, however, demanded that police allow them through Thoothukudi city, and blocked the Thoothukudi-Madurai national highway. Police, led by local SP Rajendran and DIG Varadharaju, however, yielded to the mob pressure and allowed the procession through Thoothukudi-Palayamkottai main road. As a precautionary measure, they ordered the closure of all shops.
The processionists, mostly drunk, however stoned the closed shops and scared away onlookers. The unruly mob damaged two cars parked near Cruze Fernando statue. The corporation building also came under the attack of the mob that reached Alangarathattu around 8.50 pm.
Pasupathi Pandian gained notoriety even as a 11th standard school-going boy when a case of murder was registered against him in Tuticorin.
A native of Alangara Thattu village in Tuticorin, Pandian subsequently quit his studies. Since then, the path he travelled was marred by violent incidents where he dabbled between the roles of a person fighting against dalit atrocities and an anti-social element.
